Boating (YELL)

Whether you plan on exploring Yellowstone’s waters in a motorized boat, kayak, canoe, or even a float tube you must obtain a permit before hitting the water. They are available in person at South Entrance, Lewis Lake Campground, Grant Village Backcountry Office, and Bridge Bay Ranger Station. In addition to these locations, permits for non-motorized watercraft are also available at West Entrance, Northeast Entrance, Mammoth Backcountry Office, Old Faithful Backcountry Office, Canyon Backcountry Office, Bechler Ranger Station, West Contact Station, and West Yellowstone Chamber of Commerce. Permits are $20/$10 (annual/7-day) for motorized boats and $10/$5 for non-motorized watercrafts. Grand Teton boating permits are honored at Yellowstone, but owners still need to register their watercraft in Yellowstone and obtain a validation sticker. To help protect wildlife all types of watercraft are prohibited from streams and rivers with the exception of the channel between Lewis and Shoshone Lakes where non-motorized boats are allowed.

Motorized boats are permitted on most of Yellowstone Lake and Lewis Lake. Boat launches are located at Lewis Lake and Bridge Bay Marina.

Xanterra Parks & Resorts has motorized boats ($47/hour) and rowboats ($10/hour) for rent at Bridge Bay Marina. Boat rentals are available from mid-June to early September on a first-come, first-served basis. The rental office opens at 8am.
